Spinal Stenosis is a chronic spine condition that typically progresses over years. Overgrowth and degeneration of supporting structures of the spine leads to narrowing of the spinal canal and decreased space available for the nerves. Spinal stenosis occurs most frequently in the lumbar and cervical spine. The resultant nerve compression leads to pain and sometimes neurological dysfunction.
As with disc herniations, most patients with spinal stenosis are treated conservatively at first with rest, medication and therapy. Many find relief with conservative treatment, but pain leading to significant decrease in quality of life and progressive neurological deficits are best treated with spinal stenosis surgery.
