Neck and back pain are common ailments, accounting for a large proportion of all emergency room visits. The most common causes include lumbar or cervical strain, disc degeneration and nerve compression (from herniated disc or spinal stenosis).
Lumbar/Cervical Strain: Strains (or sprains) are injuries to soft tissue. The muscles, tendons and ligament of the spine are subject to stretch injuries. These back injuries can cause pain and stiffness. Despite their nature, back pain can be severe. Treatment usually includes rest, anti-inflammatory medications and possibly physical therapy. Patients typically improve in short order.
Disc Degeneration and Nerve Compression: Unremitting pain, radiating pain down a limb, weakness or numbness suggests an injury to other structures besides soft tissues. These conditions are described separately.
